Synced from my Letterboxd. The five-star list is the short one. The notes attached to some of these were written for nobody in particular, usually right after the credits, and they read like it.

The Four

The films pinned to my profile. Not the best films ever made — the four I would defend hardest at two in the morning.

  1. 01

    Cinema Paradiso

    1988

    ★★★★★Logged Sep 2024

  2. 02

    Dancer in the Dark

    2000

    ★★★★★Logged Jan 2025

“I kept hearing the machine in the background and thinking that would be a great beat. 40 minutes in and I started screaming seeing Selma's imagination come to life as a musical number.”

  3. 03

    Ikiru

    1952

    ★★★★★Logged Jan 2025

“Kurosawa treats death not as a distant inevitability but as an urgent catalyst for legacy. Even something as simple as a children's playground the idea that it is a final act of compassion redefines what it means to truly live. Particularly, this movie really enforced the idea that I want to do good in this world and hope it is the same for you.”

  4. 04

    Before Sunrise

    1995

    ★★★★★Logged Jan 2025

“When I tell you I have watched so many romance movies in my lifetime, but none of them, NONE of them got me so entranced until this very movie. It MOVED me as well as probably developed my frontal lobe and altered my brain chemistry forever.”

  • Taste of Cherry

  • Paper Moon

    1973
    ★★★★★Aug 2026

“We end up with people in our lives that get us doing so many choices we would have otherwise considered. A relationship, as shown in Paper Moon doesn't just have characteristics clashing, but witty banter and a meshing of antics that just otherwise wouldn't happen on their own. When $200 is owed, this is not due to a contractual compromise that would allow for Addie to sue, because she was kept in the picture the whole time. All of us come together sometimes and simply make the best of what we get to know of each other— even if that means coning people for their money by selling bibles. Quite a lovely sentiment considering we don't know if she is really his daughter overall a joy to take in.”

  • La Strada

    1954
    ★★★★★Aug 2026

“There is no better way of finding your purpose than by continuing with the struggles that permit you from understanding it in the fist place. We are all like the pebble as the fool so succinctly mentioned. Regardless of the trope that permits us from fully understanding our circumstance (like the brute), we may redeem ourselves after all is said and done. We may (even according to the Italian's Roman Catholic underlying ideology) come to look beyond ourselves and ask this life for forgiveness, allowing us all to presently understand the sublime.”

  • Persona

    1966
    ★★★★★Apr 2026

“Probably the most beautiful black and white film I have ever seen in my life. The shots are beyond what I could ever imagine and understand why it is such a big deal to film schools for this to be a mandatory screening. Aside from that aspect, the way in which the movie starts with such cryptic imagery as if tapped into a disturbed subconscious; the meta messaging of the understanding of womanhood is beyond what I could comprehend at a first watch. This would require multiple watches in the future just to get a full glimpse of all meaning that I could possibly extract from this film. By far a masterpiece as well as I find the lack of distinguishable events going on to be but only a frail understanding of what the characters are possibly thinking. Therefore, the intention is for us as the viewers to project our very problems onto them based on if we were in their particular position just as Ingmar Bergman represented with the child reaching out in the beginning.”

  • My Dinner with Andre

    1981
    ★★★★★Apr 2026
  • “The dramatic shift in tone between all of the different volumes as well as an ambitious masterwork made all the more poignant by Mishima's suicide the day he delivered the final manuscript reminded me of how (albeit I much disagree with his overall philosophy) a truly commendable acting out of your very ideals. Having read Sun and Steel, I now see that portions of his life were a deliberate rehearsal for that final synthesis of word. Sun and Steel revealed to me how Mishima viewed the body as a "text to be perfected" and ultimately sacrificed. A conviction that lends The Sea of Fertility an almost unbearable weight almost as if each volume were both fiction and testament.”

  • The Battle of Algiers

    1966
    ★★★★★Dec 2025

“How could a movie feel so close to home yet be so far away and so distant from the present?”

  • Chinatown

    1974
    ★★★★★Dec 2025

“Nothing about this movie that I will say will be of any shock but I found it really bizarre having learned about Jack Nicholson's life and his discovery of his sister being his mother as well as his mother being his grandmother around the time that this movie was filmed. Aside from this tidbit, what a phenomenal ending to have it end up being such a tragedy that doesn't get resolved but merely ends in the street is spectacular. One of my favorite detective films I have seen so far!”

  • World of Tomorrow

    2015
    ★★★★★Dec 2025

“The most concise way to show the human striving for intimacy whether we know about it in the moment (like Emily prime) or we do. We need each other in the end, that is the fundamental idea of our nature and has been so beautifully demonstrated by this convoluted and grim spectacle of a short.”

  • Boogie Nights

    1997
    ★★★★★Sep 2025

“I was really enjoying this movie and then got jump scared by a penis. All jokes aside I can't believe that this was made by a 26 year old at the time. A testament of the direction that is to come from PTA in the near future.”

  • Samurai Champloo

    ★★★★★Aug 2025
  • No Other Land

    2024
    ★★★★★Aug 2025

“I could barely scrape by watching this. What horrified me more to watch this was this has been an occurring theme throughout history. I know that the political landscape is entirely convoluted but what kind of outcome are we expecting when treating people like this? Absolute calamity in its purest form and is too disheartening to believe but we must continue on and do our part to help each other out.”

  • 13th

    2016
    ★★★★★Aug 2025

“To think in this particular way has been eye-opening. Especially to consider the 13th amendment in it's clause to not include prison is paramount to why this idea could persist so consistently. Angela Davis (whom I wasn't aware of prior to this documentary) had incredible points to make and am inspired from this to read her book "Are Prisons Obsolete?"”

  • “Watching this my jaw was on the floor the entirety of the screening as if I myself was about to burst and sing. This is perfection incarnate when it comes to musical performances in my book.”

  • I Dream in Another Language

    2017
    ★★★★★Jun 2025

  • The Cranes Are Flying

    1957
    ★★★★★May 2025

“Absolutely devastating from start to finish. For one, I love the anti-war sentiment (as I find that to be the ultimate theme in most decent war films) and of course the romantic gestures for longing and hope, only for us to find out that life never really works out the way we intend it to. Lastly, the theme of cranes flying is so bittersweet and has definitely put the impression upon me to think more of those natural events that cause me to think of my loved ones.”

“I was thinking that this plot was so good it could practically be Shakespeare only to find out it was inspired by King Lear. One of Kurosawa's best works and it a testament to how brutal war can be even towards your own family.”

  • Three Colours: Red

“Deciding what is true and what isn't now seems to me a lack of modesty”

  • Wild Strawberries

    1957
    ★★★★★Jan 2025

“A beautiful analogy, using the wild strawberries from his childhood as a metaphor for life’s sweet moments precious, fleeting, and gone once the season ends. Much like his advancing age. Thank you Bergman for this lovely movie.”

  • Dancer in the Dark

    ★★★★★Jan 2025

““Nothing is of its own explanation. Is there a better description of a cube than that of its construction?” I know how this is going to sound.... but this reminded me of Spinoza's metaphysical concepts and I fucking love Spinoza so this quote had me shooketh. This movie was so damn superb I left having this be one of my top 2 favorite movies of 2024.”

  • Sunset Boulevard

    1950
    ★★★★★Jan 2025

“The OG influencer mentality. It is such a shame that so many silent film actors had been shunned right after sound came to be in Hollywood, personally reminds me of Bela Lugosi and the unfortunate series of events that followed for the last stages of his life.”

  • The Rocky Horror Picture Show

    1975
    ★★★★★Jan 2025

“If you’re going to confuse your parents with one late-night cult classic, make it this one”

  • The Wild Robot

    2024
    ★★★★★Jan 2025

“This is what happens when we want to represent maternal love in it's purest form. You take a robot that is supposed to have no soul or feeling and then have it assimilate doing so for the circumstance of taking care of a living being (and eventually of course all living beings on the island). A demonstration of love and being loved in return, this is Dreamwork's Masterpiece.”

“Seeing a father try to empathize with his son by taking the very thing that has gripped their child for so long is a form of love I never considered before. The quiet resolve and vulnerability collide in moments that are too painfully honest as they are profoundly moving. Immersing oneself in another's suffering could also be a path toward healing which yes is quite a radical form of empathy but one that was unique at least to me in this story.”
